Davey out, Checker in

Melbourne Victory’s W-League team has been dealt a blow with news that Brianna Davey has withdrawn from the Matildas squad through injury.

The goalkeeper had been in contention to don the gloves in two friendlies against China, but flew back to Melbourne last night after initial tests confirmed a low grade gluteal strain.

Victory are still awaiting the results of an MRI scan taken in Sydney, but are likely to be without their first choice goalkeeper for the trip to Perth next weekend.

Understudy Cassandra Dimovski looks set to take Davey’s place, with a replacement goalkeeper likely to be called up later this week to sit on the bench.

In happier news for the team, defender Emma Checker has been called up to the Matildas after a raft of injuries decimated the squad.

It will be the young starlet’s second call up to the senior national set up after debuting against Hong Kong last year, as she continues her meteoric rise since moving to Melbourne this season.

She joins fellow Victory teammates Stephanie Catley and Lisa De Vanna as they prepare to take on China in Wollongong and Parramatta in the next few days.
