Soccer5s Dandenong has teamed up with CanTeen to put on an non-for-profit, five-a-side tournament to help raise money for young people dealing with the secondary issues stemming from cancer.

The mixed tournament will take place on the 4th of June – kicking off from 10am – with a squad roster of up to eight players participating in a minimum of three, 20-minute fixtures plus finals.

All profits on the day will go towards CanTeen.

The charity aims to not only assist youngsters who may be battling cancer, but they also aim to help teenagers cope with cancer in the family, exploring, understanding and learning to deal with their range of emotions they may experience.

It also sets out to help young people rebuild the foundations of life that may have dissipated with whatever life-changing event may have transpired.

“CanTeen works by having young people at the centre of everything we do. We were set up by a group of young cancer patients in 1985 and still have young people affected by cancer guiding the organisation at every level,” explains the organisation.

“Combined with our leading edge research into the emotional and social impacts of cancer, it ensures that we truly understand how cancer is different in a young person’s world.”

It promises to be a fun event, which aims to accomodate players of any ability, with at least two females starting on field at all time.

Soccer5s Dandenong will host a range of activities, challenges and competitions for the team’s to participate in, including crossbar challenges, top bins challenges and dizzy penalties.

There will also be prizes for the eventual winner, with registration costs starting from $250 for teams, and $25 for individual spectators.

“Supporting an organisation such as CanTeen is important because it helps spread awareness of the many people are affected by cancer,” Said CanTeen Vice Chairman Oli Permal.

“It shows that not only the patient is affected, but the young people surrounded by the patient are affected also.

“Support also provides many benefits for members to participate in such as counselling, overnight programs, recreation days & online services.

“The aim of the Tournament is to increase awareness of the work CanTeen does but to also raise funds to help them continue the work they are doing in providing services to help young people living with cancer.”
