Cohadzic: Pfeiffer best in league

Ashburton Women coach Sinisa Cohadzic heralded captain Christine Pfeiffer as one of the best players in the league following his side’s 2-2 draw against Casey Comets on Wednesday night.

Pfeiffer was outstanding for Ashy during their Round 10 catch up match, instrumental in the centre of defence as her side hung on for an entertaining and well fought 2-2 draw.

“Christine Pfeiffer is just a class above everyone and they way she is playing now, she is probably the best in the league in that position,” Cohadzic said about his talisman.

To make matters even more impressive, the utility had been managing a niggle since limping off the field against Bulleen only two weeks ago.

“She’s carrying an injury and to tell you honestly it’s scary to think how she’d play if she didn’t have any injuries,” Cohadzic explained.

Aside from singling out his captain, Cohadzic took plenty of positives out of Ashy’s performance.

The result saw Ashburton pick up their first point since defeating Monbulk in Round 9, maintaining their slim chances of survival as they stare down an eight point gap to next placed Cairnlea.

“We let ourselves down conceding that goal in the last minute of the first half and we weren’t physically in the game in the first half,” Cohadzic said.

“They were just physically on top of us and that what cost us the two goals.”

“At half-time we had to correct that a little bit and the second half was a lot better but as I said we targeted a certain part of their defence tonight and it worked for us.”

Melina Ayres was a common outlet utilised down the flank to effect, netting the hosts second and handing Ashy the lead after 30 minutes.

The coach also had plenty of praise for his young side after a three day turn around, backing up two games in the space of four days.

“Credit to these girls to back up from Sunday to Wednesday and having three 14 year old girls there, it’s a big thing and credit to them.”

“Last ten minutes I was just trying to hold onto the result we had because we could not push anymore so we just played it out to get the result.”

Ashburton’s next game is on Monday night at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex against Sandringham SC.
