Cup tie in doubt

by Zee Ko 0

The women’s knockout cup tie between South Melbourne WFC and Heidelberg United tomorrow has been thrown into doubt after talks between the clubs concerning a replacement fixture broke down, The Corner Flag can reveal.

Despite starting negotiations as far as four weeks back, discussions between the two Women’s Premier League teams seem to have descended into farce, with acrimonious accusations from both sides regarding this Orthodox Easter fixture.

There is a possibility that only one team will turn up for kickoff tomorrow, with Heidelberg having informed their players that the club had effectively forfeited the tie.

In a startling turn of events though, no official forfeit has been lodged with the Football Federation, which means that South Melbourne will still have to travel to the game in order to claim any potential walkover.

The Corner Flag understands that Heidelberg will be holding an emergency board meeting today to discuss the potential fallout, but club sources remain tight lipped as to their plans moving forward.

South Melbourne are believed to have preferred to play the game earlier this week, but Heidelberg were pushing for a game during the following week, leading to an impasse.

Update: South Melbourne are through to the next round of the Cup, after Heidelberg officially confirmed forfeiture of this fixture to the FFV.
