Early struggles lead to Gangemi’s Werribee departure

Domenico Gangemi has departed Werribee City, with the club announcing his resignation on Wednesday night.

Gangemi took over from interim coach Tony Trifunov in early August of last year, the latter replacing inaugural NPL coach Nino Ragusa.

His spell included nine games in charge, including two wins, one draw and six defeats.

He led the team to two wins in opening games against Northcote and Oakleigh, briefly fuelling hope that the Bees would make a dramatic survival escape in 2015, but it was not to be as City was defeated by North Geelong in their final fixture of the season.

Despite a raft of on-field changes over the summer and a emphasised focus on youth, a 3-3 opening round draw against whittlesea is their only point of the season, with five straight losses following.

Their latest result was an away defeat to Eastern Lions, with the 10-man bees losing 4-0.

The south western suburbs club were in State League 2 as far back as 2011, before two promotions in three years under the tenure of Ragusa saw the club promoted to the top flight ahead of the inaugural NPL season in 2014.

The unfashionable City managed to secure survival on a dramatic final day following a tense 1-1 draw at Port Melbourne, but results at Galvin Park dipped in 2015, with Ragusa paying the price for two wins in 19 games

Club chairman Giovanni Inserra said via press release: “Whilst it is terribly disappointing that Domenic has come to this decision, he feels that in the best interests of the club and the playing group it is the correct thing to do.

“From the club’s perspective we do not believe that the lack of results to date is a reflection of the technical or tactical ability of the coaching staff and nor do we believe that the current group of players are not good enough for this competition.

“I firmly believe that we have put together a playing group in line with the club’s vision and long term strategy, which is to return to the top NPL tier by season 2019 and we will continue with this strategy irrespective of who is appointed to take on the Head Coach position at the club.”

No announcement on a replacement has been made, with interim arrangements in place until such a decision is undertaken.

He becomes the second head coach to step down from his role, following Esteban Quintas’ departure from Bendigo City after one game.
