Sharks, Hume take positives from season opener

Hume manager Lou Acevski has focused on the good, not the bad, despite going down 3-1 to Port Melbourne at home in their opening NPL Victoria fixture on Sunday night.

Hume were in the game, arguably creating the better chances even at 2-0 down, but weren’t clinical enough when it mattered.

City’s boss isn’t concerned however stating “I thought we played some good football at times…we created a lot of opportunities, but that’s the difference in football, if you don’t take your chances, you come away with zero points.”

“Look, the more games we play together, the more we gel, the quicker we gel, it will be better for everybody.”

Acevski also noted that the competition within the squad should improve as players come back from injury, whilst the club are also waiting for approval on some transfers.

“I think we had about six boys that couldn’t play today because of injury or transfers didn’t come through, so it’s gonna be better for the team when there’s a bit more competition.

Overall, the new players, yeah I was happy with their performance,” he added.

For Port Melbourne coach Eric Vassiliadis, the result was a ‘wonderful’ one, considering the conditions, opponent, playing away and the form of new signing Trent Rixon.

“Yeah look, wonderful, wonderful…it’s an extension of our preparation I think [undefeated in pre-season], in terms of the way we wanted to play.”

Vassiliadis added that he was pleased with his team’s attitude.

“Conditions were oppressive for both teams, we understand that, but a word that comes to me is character,” He noted.

The form of new striker Rixon was also pleasing for the Sharks coach.

“We needed somebody to finish off what we’ve already started, but Trent’s more than just that; I think his maturity, his experience, his leadership, his, you know, he’s probably a little bit underestimated.”

The boss was also quick to praise the rest of his players too.

“We’ve got some other boys that are just outstanding.

“Probably the most encouraging thing about that performance is, like most people who are playing early, I think we’ve got a hell of a lot more upside”

Port Melbourne host Pascoe Vale on Friday night, whilst Hume back up against newly promoted Avondale FC at home on Sunday.
