The story of the weekend again is Northcote City, with Goran Lozanovski’s men making it seven wins from seven games in 2013. But another major talking point was Pascoe Vale’s incredible 2-0 win away to Dandenong Thunder.

Friday, 24 May 2013
Bentleigh Greens 2 (David Stirton 25′, Luke Sherbon 46′)
Melbourne Knights 1 (Jacob Colosimo 67′)
Venue: Kingston Heath Soccer Complex

Bentleigh Greens kept up the pace with Northcote City after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Melbourne Knights on Friday night. It was not the greatest of performances but Bentleigh were able to hold off the Knights with goals to David Stirton and Luke Sherbon, before Jacob Colosimo scoring what proved to be a mere consolation mid-way through the second half. Bentleigh remain second and unbeaten in their past four games.

Friday, 24 May 2013
Richmond SC 2 (Josh Groenwald 14′, Kliment Taseski 90′)
Hume City 3 (Turhan Sumbul 31′, Jarryd Barnes 53′, Nick Hegarty 72′)
Venue: Kevin Bartlett Reserve

Despite scoring the opening goal of the game for the third week in a row, Richmond SC walked away with zero points for the seventh straight week after going down 3-2 at home to Hume City. Josh Groenwald gave Richmond an early lead, but goals to Turhan Sumbul, Jarryd Barnes and Nick Hegarty put Hume 3-1 up late in the second half. Kliment Taseski gave Richmond a small glimmer of hope with a goal in injury-time, but the scores remained 3-2. Hume City now sit in a very respectable fourth position on the table with their second win in a row.

Saturday, 25 May 2013
Green Gully Cavaliers 1 (Jason Hayne 51′ PEN)
Port Melbourne Sharks 1 (Luke Bowen 24′)
Venue: Green Gully Reserve

A Jason Hayne equaliser early in the second-half ensured the points were to be shared between Green Gully and Port Melbourne on Saturday afternoon. The away side took the lead through Luke Bowen after 24 minutes, but were made to rue missed opportunities as Green Gully equalised on 51 minutes thanks to a Jason Hayne spot-kick. The game was Gully’s first since they parted ways with manager Dean Hennesey during the week after the Cavs had picked up just four points from a possible 18.

Saturday, 25 May 2013
Dandenong Thunder 0
Pascoe Vale SC 2 (Marco Santilli 10′, Michael Ferrante 51′)
Venue: George Andrews Reserve

Dandenong Thunder suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Pascoe Vale SC on Saturday afternoon at George Andrews Reserve. In the upset of the round, Marco Santilli gave the away side the lead inside the opening 10 minutes. Michael Ferrante made it 2-0 on the other side of the half, with Pascoe Vale ending Dandenong’s chance of a fifth straight VPL victory.

Saturday, 25 May 2013
Southern Stars 0
Northcote City 4 (Michael Eager 28′, Evan Kounavelis 31′, Dean Piemonte 48, 59′)
Venue: Kingston Heath Soccer Complex

Northcote City are sitting in seventh heaven after a seventh straight victory to start the 2013 VPL season. Michael Eager put City in to the lead after 28 minutes before Evan Kounavelis got himself on the score-sheet just four minutes later. Fourth and fifth goals of the season for Dean Piemonte in the second half capped off the rout, moving Northcote City to 21 points from a possible 21. Next week though is the big test for Northcote as they come up against second-placed Bentleigh Greens.

Sunday, 26 May 2013
South Melbourne 2 (Dimi Hatzimouratis 23′, 45′)
Oakleigh Cannons 1 (Alex Smith 90+1′)
Venue: Lakeside Stadium

South Melbourne made it two wins from their opening two games at Lakeside Stadium in 2013 thanks to a brace from Dimi Hatzimouratis. The youngster, who missed the majority of last season, has been a revelation for South this season with three goals so far. Despite a late goal by new signing Alex Smith, Oakleigh was unable to find an equaliser with South Melbourne taking all three points and keeping third position on the table.
