McGuinness: Someone will have a hell of a hiding

Bulleen Lions head coach Bob McGuinness has warned future opponents to watch out for the goals, believing that his side will eventually begin to take their chances and score a bagful of goals.

McGuinness has been critical of his side’s finishing ability in recent weeks, as they haven’t been able to capitalise on the chances created through their tidy football.

It was a similar situation on Sunday against Boroondara Eagles, and McGuinness assured everyone that it’s a problem they are working on rectifying.

“Seriously, we work on these things at training and every one of them hits the roof of the net. Then we get into game situations and it’s just we haven’t been in these positions too frequently,” McGuinness said.

“We are having plenty of chances and it’s just composure and just taking that big breath before they finish that’s all. They’re a young group, they’ll get used to it.

“One of these days they’ll go in and someone will have a hell of a hiding – at some point in time they’ll go in but it’s frustrating.”

Though Bulleen only managed a point against Boroondara, McGuinness was pleased with his team’s endeavour and that the overall picture was a positive one.

“The thing that I was really pleased about was we stuck to the plan, we kept trying to play and they tried to make it difficult for us,” he said.

“They man marked but we kept trying to play, and we created chances through playing, and we didn’t take them.

“I’m happy with the effort, I’m happy with the intensity and I’m happy about the way the girls are playing.”

He also reserved some praise for his newly-promoted opponents, who have and should continue to cause a splash in the competition this year.

“What a terrific advert that you’ve had two teams that are new to the WPL and have put on a performance like that. Both teams. Fair play to Boroondara,” he said.

“They perhaps didn’t have the individual passing ability but they put on a great show and full credit to them. I thought they did well tonight.

“They’ll take points off a lot of teams if they play with that spirit.”
