NPL Player of the Month: February

by Staff Writers 0

The opening three rounds of the NPL season has seen a number of familiar names rise to the top early with a standout month of football. Mixed amongst those are a pair of debutants, who helped the Melbourne Knights and Port Melbourne respectively to a strong start in the league. They make up the nominees for the NPL Player of the Month for February, which you can have your say in via the poll below.

In other exciting news, TCF would like to announce that for the first time, it will be offering a prize for the winner of the Player of the Month! There’s more incentive now than ever to ensure you get your vote in. Stay tuned for more details.

Alex Caniglia (Green Gully)

Even ignoring Caniglia’s exploits last night – where he grabbed a goal and an assist – due to the game being in the month of March, the explosive winger has enjoyed a strong start to life with the Keilor Downs based outfit. Caniglia led the league in goals heading into this round of action with three, scoring the winner against Bulleen Lions and also having a double credited to him in a 3-3 draw with Kingston City – one goal certainly at least was undisputed – to make a big impact up front for Arthur Papas and now Brian Vanega.

Nick Hegarty (Hume City)

The 2016 gold medallist has picked up where he left off last season – and a number of years now for Hume City – with his performances being creative and clinical as always. The masterclass against St Albans was a particular highlight and he finishes the month with four assists to his name.

The signing from South Australia has hit the ground netting, providing goals and assists for the Melbourne Knights from the wing, but also contributing tireless defensive efforts in helping out his side throughout the 90 minutes each game.

Michael McGowan (Port Melbourne Sharks)

The former captain of Redlands United, the club that knocked Adelaide United out of the FFA Cup, McGowan has shown leadership and command at the back for Port Melbourne, marshalling a defence which has conceded once this term, next best after Avondale.

Ramazan Tavsancioglu (Avondale FC)

Signed as an experienced addition to the Avondale backline, Rama has been a rock in defence and the results have reflected this – three wins and three clean sheets. It’s obviously a team effort and the rest of the backline and goalkeeper Chris Oldfield has also shone, but Tavsancioglu gets our pick.
