NPL Victoria Team of the Week: Round 12

by Mark Gojszyk 0

GK: Chris Theodoridis (Heidelberg United)
Damian Iaconis, Chris Irwin and Faisal Sakhizada were the more notable of players to be thwarted by the Heidelberg custodian who helped inflict Kingston’s first defeat at home. The former especially was denied a special goal.

RB: Tim Mala (South Melbourne)
Much of South’s resurgence has come to its rock solid defensive line which has consisted with a familiar quartet of Mala, Luke Adams, Michael Eagar and Brad Norton. Mala again was fiercely competitive as he stifled Bentleigh’s attacking chances at Kingston Heath, rewarded with a clean sheer.

CB: Michael Eagar (South Melbourne)
In honesty we had Marco Jankovic lined up as a CB pick but for his late needless red card. So Michael Eager gets the nod, another reliable performance in a run of an outstanding number of weeks now for the Kiwi, who continues to do the job at one end, mopping up deliveries along the ground and in the air with ease.

CB: Alan Kearney (Port Melbourne Sharks)
Captain Kearney had to deputise at the back and the second half showing was crucial, keeping St Albans at bay and helping Port Melbourne preserve their lead, which they weren’t able to in the first. Led by example for a big three points in the bank amid a congested mid-table.

CB: Reuben Way (Heidelberg United)
“Good. Three points. Momentum build.” That was probably Way’s worst effort on the pitch in the post-match interview with Heidelberg’s media as during the 90 minutes he barely put a foot wrong in another tough and unshakable defensive display. That makes it two TOTW selections in recent times for Way.

CM: James McGarry (Hume City)
Continues to be one of Hume’s best in midfield or anywhere on the park for that matter. An industrious shift as usual, looking to open up the opponents’ defence and get his teammates into good goalscoring positions.

CM: Fraser Hills (Port Melbourne Sharks)
It was Hills’ best return since joining Port Melbourne, getting on the scoresheet twice in the eventual 3-2 win, not a bad effort for a midfielder. That also marked his first goals for the Sharks.

RAM: Matthew Breeze (Green Gully)
We’ve often featured fellow attacking Gully teammates in TOTW but this time we’ll go with Breeze, who was creative on the wing, enjoying good link up play with the likes of Caniglia and Walker and and Taseski on the left, and scoring a well-taken goal in the process.

CAM: Evan Christodoulou (Avondale FC)
Christodoulou’s first goal of the league campaign proves to be a winner as Avondale went on to defeat Bulleen 2-1. It capped off a bright game for the attacking midfielder, who was providing a cutting edge for his side throughout the 90.

LAM: Goran Zoric (Oakleigh Cannons)
A lazy hat-trick of assists on the night for Zoric, who, like Oakleigh’s results, has been getting better and better in recent times. His delivery was impeccable and his teammates benefited from it.

ST: Dusan Bosnjak (Oakleigh Cannons)
Another week where we don’t have an out-and-out striker but Bosnjak will fill that role, considering his double against Pascoe Vale. Building up to that 2016 form now with a succession of prolific displays with the goal at his mercy.

Bench:
Marko Stevanja (North Geelong Warriors)
Continues to stake a claim to cement the number one spot over Daniel Zilic with a crucial role in goals that kept North Geelong in the contest against the Knights, helping earn a share of the spoils with a point on the road.

Andreas Govas (Port Melbourne)
A crafty performance from Govas who controlled most of Port’s attacks as the central playmaker. The technically gifted midfielder was a key outlet in playing teammates into threatening positions.

Luke Gallo (Bulleen Lions)
Gallo has been one of the fledglings in Aaron Healey’s side to show plenty of promise and was certainly one of the brightest sparks in a losing side, keeping his markers on their toes during the contest.

Harry Noon (Heidelberg United)
Netted his first of the season after a long wait, but it was his forward thrust that caused Kingston plenty of headaches as the midfielder constantly looked to attack and put pressure on his opponents.

Davey van ‘t Schip (PascoeVale)
His side may have lost on the night, continuing an alarming trend in recent weeks for paco who slip out of the top six, but Davey van ‘t Schip proved he’s as solid as ever with a goal and assist.
