NPLW Team of the Season Graphic Header Goalkeepers - Emily Shields

Whether they’re the agile movers with lightning reflexes, part-time sweepers comfortable spraying passes from defence or the strong, uncompromising type that look to dominate their 18-yard-box, the ones in between the net have a crucial role in any good side. We pay homage to some of the best and bravest goalkeepers in the NPLW.

NPLW Team of the Season Graphic Header Centre Backs - Rachel Binning

Whether they’re tall or short, strong or petit, there never seems to be a shortage of quality centre half’s in the Victorian top-flight, none more so than this year’s crop, who are a good balance of steely, uncompromising labourers and the mobile ball, ball playing types with exemplary technical ability. These are the best centre backs of season 2016.

NPLW Team of the Season Graphic Header Fullbacks - Annabel Martin

The modern day fullback is ever evolving, with a lot of structures now shaped around the marauding, bombing runs from the wide defenders. Often the fittest players in a team, these players are tasked with the often unheralded task of sprinting up and down their respective flank to not only nullify any threat from their attacking counterpart, but to also contribute in their own attack on the overlap. These are some of the best of 2016.

NPLW Team of the Season Graphic Header Central Midfielders - MelindaJ Barbieri

They hold many different roles within a team, with those playing in the engine room expected to play either a shutting down role to win possession as frequently as possible, a playmaking role from either a deep or more advanced position, or a good mix of everything mentioned, floating from box-to-box to influence the play at both ends. They’re the glue that holds a good side together, and we take a look at some of the very best in a central midfield position this season.

NPLW Team of the Season Graphic Header Attacking Midfielders - Saphri Lines (Southern United)

Whether they’re the creative force pulling the strings from behind the strikers, or the more conventional attacking midfielder with more freedom to drift into the channels, these players are not only proven goal scorers but are often the focal point of team attacks as they angle deliveries to their two wide players as well as directly to the striker in front of them. These are some of the best attacking midfielders that 2016 had to offer.

NPLW Team of the Season Graphic Header Wingers - Melina Ayres

There not only to supplement the strike force, the modern day winger is now also expected to operate as an inside forward and chip in with their fair share of goals throughout the league campaign. Some of the NPLW’s biggest blue chip names plied their trade operating in a wide forward role, where they had the space in front of them to operate to the full extent of their creative abilities to help set up teammates, or find the back of the net themselves. Here are some of the very best wingers from this NPLW season.

NPLW Team of the Season Graphic Header Forwards - Leigh Gray

They carry the weight of expectation on their shoulders, but it doesn’t phase the very best forwards, who must count mental strength as a huge part of their respective game styles. Tasked with the biggest responsibility in football – sticking the ball in the back of the net – the forwards are smart, cunning and can manipulate the space in front of them to create openings for themselves and teammates to get on the score sheet. Between them, they shared 55 goals this season as we praise the goal scoring exploits of some of the NPLW’s finest.
