Richmond bolster squad with Mulcahy capture

Richmond have continued their active spell in the transfer window with the signing of Alan Mulcahy from Port Melbourne, while also bringing in defender Berkan Yurdakul.

The 32-year-old Irishman joins the club less than a month after scoring a hat-trick against them in a 7-0 rout of Rick Mensink’s men in Round 11.

Born in Dublin, Mulcahy spent the first half of his career plying his trade in the League of Ireland before deciding to move to Australia in 2008 after a spell with Shelbourne.

He first featured for the Springvale White Eagles in 2009 under Stan Webster before moving to the Southern Stars, spending the next three seasons with the club.

It was here where Mulcahy developed an effective midfield partnership with fellow Irishman Alan Kearney as the duo helped Dean Hennessey’s side achieve promotion to the VPL in 2011.

After consolidated their place in the top-flight, the central midfielder moved to Hume City in 2013 before signing for the Dandenong Thunder in 2014.

He renewed his partnership with Kearney at George Andrews Reserve and captained the club in the first half of the 2015 season before moving to Port Melbourne in the mid-season transfer window.

He leaves the Sharks after making 20 appearances for the club which yielded three goals and all up has 77 games of experience in the Victorian top flight and provides added strength to Richmond’s midfield.

Another player to join the 2015 NPL1 Champions is 23 year-old defender Berkan Yurdakul, who joins from the State League 1 side Altona East Phoenix.

The versatile defender is expected to bolster a Richmond defence which has shipped 42 goals in their opening 14 league games, an average of three a game.

The duo join Ratip Cileli, Sergio Mshali and Jakob Williams as new additions to the Kevin Bartlett Reserve dressing room following the departures of Samuel Catherine, Travis Chalk-Hatton, Brendan Gonano, Jay Kelly, Nik Popovich and Josh Valadon.
