Sanders to end decade long Gully association

The Corner Flag understands Matthew Sanders may leave Green Gully in the newly opened transfer window, ending his decade long association with the club.

The Tasmanian signed in 2006 from Glenorchy Knights as a 19-year-old and went on to win two VPL titles in 2010 and 2011.

Green Gully endured a tough initiation into NPL Victoria, finishing 10th last season, and despite starting well this campaign have slumped to 11th on the ladder with the same defensive issues plaguing the side.

Regardless of the club’s form in recent times, Sanders has been a constant presence up front, bagging 11 goals last season and five so far this campaign.

He was not included in Green Gully’s match day squad in the 2-1 defeat against Port Melbourne on Saturday, fuelling speculation about his imminent departure.

One potential suitor is Avondale FC, as Sanders may swap green for blue and link with former Gully teammate Jeff Fleming at Doyle Street, with Anthony Barbieri’s newly promoted side faring much better in mid-table.
