2014 Finish: 2nd (State League 1) Following a tough year the season prior, which saw the centrally based club come close to relegation, 2014 was targeted as a season consolidation. But South Yarra blew those expectations away with a stellar season, which saw them finish second on the ladder, and earn promotion the tough way, grinding it out against two top opposition in the promotion play-offs.
Despite a strong start, two losses to Melbourne Uni and Caulfield Cobras provided a much-needed wake up call for the squad. They responded in style, with their defensive stability leading the way to an unbeaten end of the season; 13 games straight including play-offs.
But they had to do it the hard way in those games, first beating Melbourne Uni on penalties in the semi-final before winning the decider in extra time.
New Signings: The main goal for South Yarra was to retain the core of their squad as they made the move to the top flight. The coaching staff have shown faith in the promotion winning squad, and as such, no player has left for another WPL club.
They have however strengthened with some WPL experience, bringing in Sharon Walsh from Cairnlea to compete with fellow shot-stopper Claire Imray, who was one of the best keepers in SL1 last year. Midfielder Katie Foster also comes into the squad, making the move from Ashburton.
Players to watch: A lot of the intrigue around the promoted clubs is the change in exposure they undergo as they’re thrown into the limelight. While some of these names may not be commonplace yet, expect them to be come season’s end. Captain Nicola Bell comes with a fantastic reputation, finishing as South Yarra’s player of the season, with the central defender a key figure for Hall’s side.
The Samba sisters – we don’t think that’ll stick – Marcela Marques and Priscilla Ribas bring attacking flair to the table and South Yarra will be hoping their link-up play sees them notch up the goals.
What to expect in 2015: The mentality of promoted sides is sometimes the key aspect into how a side will fare with the increased level of competition. All the signs here however are positive ones, and they look a side that’s prepared to fight and grind out results. While they may just be looking down more than they are up, they’ll give their very best in this league and will be better for the experience. If their defence performs as admirably as last season, then safety is an achievable target.
