Holmes & Bentleigh primed for Championship tilt

He may have won the 2014 PS4 Victorian National Premier League with South Melbourne but Tyson Holmes is chasing further success, this time in a green shirt.

The Queenslander joins Bentleigh Greens following a strong two year stint at Lakeside Stadium, scoring eight goals in 58 appearances and landing a spot in The Corner Flag’s 2014 Fan Voted NPL Team of the Season.

For Holmes, the bustling attacking midfielder arrives in Melbourne’s south-east with the allure of lifting Bentleigh’s first ever Premier League crown a major factor.

“Above all, the major reason [why I joined is] I want to win the title with Bentleigh Greens,” Holmes revealed.

“[Bentleigh] have never won the top flight before. They have been close a few times and obviously have had an outstanding result in the FFA Cup but there is a specific trophy missing from their cabinet and I want to help them win the league.”

He also added the philosophy and culture at Bentleigh was another major incentive when putting pen to paper.

“The possession and passing based game JA [John Anastasiadis] has them playing suits my style,” he said.

“The club is very well set up and has great facilities and a great reputation. It is a family club and from the moment I stepped foot in the door they have made me feel very welcome.”

Holmes becomes the fourth Queenslander to arrive at Bentleigh following the 2014 campaign with QLD NPL trio Chris Lucas, Troy Ruthven and Matt Thurtell signing new deals with the club.

The attacking midfielder is expected to spearhead a frightening front third, alongside Lucas, Thurtell and former Knights forward Daniel Visevic.

“The squad Bentleigh have assembled on paper is quality.

“We have retained the majority of the top performers as well as making some great additions. The players that have been brought in have all won titles before which is important to create a winning.”

Combined with an intimidating squad, Holmes reserved nothing but praise for his new coach.

“[Anastasiadis] has made me very welcome from the first time I arrived at the club,” he said.

“He is a very good and technical coach that has a specific style and brand of football that he likes his team to play.

“He is always challenging and getting the best out of his players, as he demands a high level of quality and commitment.”

Bentleigh Greens kicks off its 2015 PS4 NPL season against North Geelong Warriors on Friday February 20 at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex.
