The reigning champions had a strong flurry of form in the last month of the regular season to thank for their finals finish, as they secured a return of three wins from four to bolt home into second place. The team faced Canberra United in the Semi-final and were defeated 0[4]-0[5] via spot-kicks. The 2014 season was a landmark year for the club as it saw them compete in competitive continental football for the first time, losing 5-0 to Japanese outfit Okayama Yunogo Belle in the first round of the 2014 International Women’s Club Championship.

They continued to extend their reputation as one of the best teams in the league, stringing together another impressive season that saw them sitting equal top of the league with two games remaining. Two 1-0 defeats saw them slip down the ladder, but they found their form in the finals series, defeating Sydney FC 3-2 in the Semi-Final and then the Brisbane Roar 2-0 in the Grand Final.

They finished just a win off first placed Brisbane Roar and also ended the season with the most stringent defence, conceding just 14 goals for the season. The team progressed to their first ever W-League Grand Final with a penalty shoot-out win over Perth Glory (1[3]-1[4]), before going on to lose the decider 3-1 to Sydney FC.

The team were defeated 1-0 by Canberra United in the Semi-Final, with a heartbreaking late goal from Michelle Heyman consigning them to another finals loss.

In the inaugural year of the W-League, Melbourne Victory finished fifth on the ladder with four wins from 10 rounds finishing with 12 points and an even goal difference.
The team did not qualify for the finals, falling two points short of Sydney FC in fourth spot in a close run race for a finals berth. The club boasted a number of high-profile players in their inaugural season, with Matildas players Melissa Barbieri, Tal Karp, Louisa Bisby and Selin Kuralay, New Zealand internationals Marlies Oostdam and Rebecca Tegg, Canadian capped Brittany Timko as well as future star Laura Alleway all on the books. Then 17-year-old Enza Barilla was there for the Victory’s inaugural season.
