WPL Team of the Week: Round 20

by Jordan Lim 0

GK: Alondra Villa (Boroondara Eagles)
It may have been her last game of the WPL season, but what a way to go out on. She was immense for the Eagles, halting Bundoora’s Lisa De Vanna and Elly Curo on multiple occasions to help her side to an important – and potentially title-clenching – three points.

LB: Katrina Avilla (Casey Comets)
Despite being a part of a defence that conceded six goals, there was little doubt that American Katrina Avila was one of Casey’s better performers in their 6-4 loss to FC Bulleen Lions. Kept Dani Gudelj quiet and contributed plenty up the pitch. Raelynn Mikell along side her in defence was also impressive.

CB: Sienna Fogarty (Sandringham SC)
An absolute rock in defence for Sandringham SC, their captain had a huge say in her side’s clean sheet against Box Hill United. Made a number of important plays to deny a dangerous United forward line that were restricted to only a handful of half-chances on the night.

RB: Demi Mihaloudis (Heidelberg United)
An all-round performance at right-back by Mihaloudis, who did well to keep Caulfield scoreless but then also got forward to add another dimension to Heidelberg’s attack. Almost scored following a good run and shot that was saved.

CM: Cindy Lay (Bulleen Lions)
It was an incredibly hard task to pick a standout from Bulleen, who had a number of players in decent form. We decided on Cindy Lay who finished with three assists in a quality display. Strong on the ball and always looked forwards with her passing.

CM: Fede Frew (Ashburton United)
The second player to make an appearance in the Team of the Week on her 2015 swansong, Fede Frew was one of the standout performers for Ashburton United in their nailbiting win over South Melbourne. Laid on two assists in the second half when the game was on the line and was the player to turn the contest.

CM: Adriana Taranto (Senior NTC)
The midfield maestro was in fine for the Senior NTC, controlling the play and feeding her forwards with good delivery all day. Also contributed to the scoreboard directly with the opening goal of the contest.

AM: Racheal Quigley (Bulleen Lions)
Finished the game with two goals and was a menace playing in the attacking midfield role. Made a number of incisive balls forward in the first half, and scored two important goals in the second half, both with quality finishes.

AM: Julia Nicolaci (Heidelberg United)
One of the most low-key hat-tricks you’ll ever see, with goals coming directly from two corners and a penalty. But it wasn’t just Nicolaci’s set-pieces that earned her place in the team, as she was also responsible for many of her side’s thrusts forward with piercing passes and neat link-up play.

ST: Antonia Niteros (Casey Comets)
Casey’s forward was one of their best avenues on goal in their 6-4 loss to Bulleen Lions. She was a constant threat on goal, forcing Cass Dimovski into action early with a stunning save and scored the goal to put Casey up in the second half. Was confident and decisive on the ball and provided drive into the final third.

ST: Georgia Cloepfil (Ashburton United)
Cloepfil showcased her lethalness in front of goal against South Melbourne, racking up a well-earned hat-trick with three clinical finishes. Her first saw her place the ball into the bottom corner, before smashing one home at the far post. She stole the match ball and the three points with a 90th minute winner to cap of a brilliant individual game.

SUBSTITUTES:

Melissa Maizels (Ashburton United)
Much like starting keeper Villa, Ashburton United’s Melissa Maizels was absolutely vital to her side taking three points out of their crunch match-up. Made crucial saves at the right time and could do little about the ones she did concede.

Charlotte McGlip (Bulleen Lions)
Another decent performer for Bulleen was young Charlotte McGlip, who enjoyed a number of good runs forward on the right wing. Set up a lovely team goal for Racheal Quigley with her tailing cross to the top of the area.

Lisa De Vanna (Bundoora United)
On another day, De Vanna would’ve had a couple of goals and Bundoora would’ve had the three points. But she was constantly denied by the brilliance of Alondra Villa in goals, but was busy nonetheless.

Aliesha Newman (Boroondara Eagles)
Was a bright spark for Boroondara, providing plenty of movement down the left wing, particularly in the first half. Was rarely beaten in a one-on-one contest when defending her flank.

Jamie Pollock (South Melbourne)
One of South Melbourne’s strongest performers in their heartbreaking loss to Ashburton United, the midfielder was in the thick of things, making plenty of decisive runs forward and

Harriet Cordner (Casey Comets)
The sixth and final nominee from the Casey vs. Bulleen contest is Harriet Cordner, who provided plenty of steel to the Casey midfield. She scored their first equaliser with a classic header, played a role in their second and was important to their structure through the middle. Was taken off on the hour mark.
