Jackson treble sparks Victory bloodbath

by Jordan Lim 0

It was a perfect Melbourne afternoon for the Victory women, who put away a disappointing Adelaide United 4-0 at sunny Lakeside Stadium.

Amy Jackson was the hero on the day, netting a hat-trick, while Christine Nairn chipped in with a stunning goal of her own.

The result leaves Adelaide firmly rooted at the bottom of the table with five straight defeats.

In a scrappy opening 15 minutes, De Vanna had the first shot in anger, attempting a wayward long range drive from distance.

De Vanna was looking dangerous, and a one-two with Nairn saw her take a touch too wide in the box, losing an opportunity on goal

Adelaide’s game was reflecting its ladder position, sitting deep and scrapping to keep Victory at bay.

The hosts were looking to get forward at any opportunity, with Brewer given a license to roam forward from her fullback to add width to Victory’s attack

However, the home side’s execution was letting down its territorial advantage, with a number of stray balls not finding the intended target.

Adelaide’s first chance on goal saw Katrine Pederson’s free kick just missing Katie Holtham’s head in front of goal.

It took a moment of individual brilliance to open the deadlock in the 29th minute, with Nairn firing in a piledriver from distance into Melissa Barbier’s top corner.

Victory almost doubled their advantage when Amy Jackson barged her way into the box from a free kick delivery, but Barbieri was on hand to pluck the ball from her feet.

De Vanna was the next to spur a golden opportunity, when Nairn played a pass to Gema Simon out wide, who whipped it across the face of goal to De Vanna, but the veteran Matilda lobbed the ball over the crossbar from close range.

The second half played out in similar vein to the first, with Victory attacking intently but not immediately opening up Adelaide’s defence.

The Lady Reds had a half chance on the counter, with Kristy Moore played through on goal, but Davey was ready to cut off the delivery.

Amy Jackson scored Victory’s second goal on the stroke of the hour, receiving the ball in the box from Gema Simon, steadying herself and placing it past the ‘keeper.

Lisa-Marie Woods had Adelaide’s first clear chance on target, forcing Brianna Davey into a spilled save, but the Victory ‘keeper pounced on the rebound.

A marauding De Vanna then ran down the right wing and attempted a low cross to Gema Simon, but the ball evaded everybody.

With time running out it looked like the scoreline would remain 2-0, but two late scrambled goals by Amy Jackson doubled the scoreline, capping a dominant performance by the Victory.
