Melbourne Victory W-League has appointed Joe Montemurro as the new head coach for the upcoming 2014/15 Westfield W-League season.

The job became available following the W-League Grand Final, with championship winning coach Dave Edmondson returning home to manage Bristol Academy WFC.

Montemurro was a leading candidate for the job, impressing many through his work with the National Training Centre Under 17 Girls team this season, while also holding and AFC and UEFA A Licence.

He also has plenty of coaching experience at senior level, taking charge of Sunshine George Cross (2006-07), Coburg United (2008) and FC Port Moresby (2013) as a head coach, while working as an assistant at South Melbourne (2010-12).

In a statement released by the FFV, Montemurro was delighted to have been appointed head coach of the Victory, especially with the chance to work with a title winning squad.

“It’s a great honour to be appointed as coach of the current champions and I look forward to continuing the success that is now part of the culture in the group,” Montemurro said.

His first match in charge will take place around September, with the commencement of the W-League moved forward due to the 2015 Asian Cup being held in January.
