Victory sees red as Adelaide completes rout

by Mark Gojszyk 0

Adelaide United have claimed their first ever W-League win in Victoria, emphatically defeating Melbourne Victory 4-0 at Epping Stadium.

Rosie Sutton starred with a hat-trick, Tiarn Powell added a single, while the hosts ended the contest with 10 players after Melissa Barbieri was sent off in the second half.

Both sides exchanged shots on target in opening stages of the contest, with Lauren Steer and Hayley Raso forcing saves from their respective keepers.

Rosie Sutton was busy early, playing through Tiarn Powell through on goal, before picking up Alex Gummer’s pass to maraud through on goal, but both times Barbieri was able to deny her former side.

The early ascendancy was rewarded as the Powell and Sutton again combined to punish Natoli’s stray pass out the back, with the former finding the latter for a powerful finish from distance.

Victory set about pegging back the deficit and Christine Nairn almost squared the ledger when she launched a stinging drive from distance that rocketed off the upright and back into play.

The visitors doubled the advantage following more sloppy work by the hosts, with Sarah Killion’s set piece bundled over the line by Powell.

Nairn again looked the most likely to find the back of the net for her side, curling in a free kick that Savage held.

Dave Edmonson made a change after the break by switching the side to a back three, replacing Briar Palmer with MelindaJ Barbieri.

However, the change did nothing to stem the visitors’ momentum as Barbieri once more had to bail her side out with a double save to deny Emily Condon and Steer from a corner.

She could do nothing to stop Sutton’s second goal moments later, who expertly finished Chantelle Ryder’s pinpoint ball into the box.

It got worse for Barbieri and Victory as the custodian, who had been her side’s saving grace on many occasions, was shown a red card for holding Sutton in the box and denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

Substitute Cassandra Dimovski subsequently couldn’t stop Sutton completing her hat-trick from the spot.

Enza Barilla had the best chance to score a consolation for Victory, but her volley from Raso’s cross flew over the bar.

The two then swapped roles as Barilla found Raso in the box, but her shot also flew over the bar, summing up Victory’s tough day at the office.
