Melbourne Victory Women have made a big statement ahead of the W-League finals, trouncing Newcastle Jets 4-0 at Kingston Heath Reserve in their final regular season fixture.
Racheal Quigley and Lisa Devanna ran the show with hat-tricks of goals and assists respectively, while Beattie Goad also popped up for second ever league goal.
Newcastle had a couple of early shots in anger but couldn’t trouble Brianna Davey.
Van Egmond played Rhali Dobson through on goal, but her shot flew safely wide of Davey’s near post.
From that moment Victory took control of the contest, opening the scoring in the 22nd minute when De Vanna’s run down the wing and low cross wasn’t dealt with by Hannah Southwell, with Quigley squeezing the ball home from a tight angle.
Victory scored in almost identical circumstances minutes later, when De Vanna’s unchecked run on the wing led to another pinpoint cross for Beattie Goad to tap home.
Fans barely had time to take their seats after the half-time break before the hosts had their third goal, with De Vanna racking up another assist to Quigley, who lobbed over Southwell into the net.
Newcastle had a rare opportunity to peg one back minutes later when Tara Andrews rounded Davey, but Hannah Brewer ran over to cover and block the shot.
Quigley completed her hat-trick in the 69th minute, receiving a ball from substitute Golcan Koca and finishing neatly.
Dobson had one last chance to net a consolation goal for the Jets when she beat Emma Checker to the ball, but hit her shot straight at Davey.
The result provides an ideal confidence boost for Joe Montemurro’s team ahead of the finals, while Newcastle need to beat Sydney next round to have a chance make the top four.
